The art of enchanting matter

Paul Beckrich's figures are created in an intensive dialogue between the matter and the artist, which always begins with the modelling of the head. "As my state of mind flows into my works, I therefore work very consciously when I am calm. I deliberately take a great deal of time to model the face, as it reflects the soul of the artwork. Being able to work artistically in this way makes me just proud and happy. A happiness that I would like to pass on with my work." explains Paul Beckrich.

Dynamics, details and lightness

Paul’s works are inspired by his numerous travels, mainly through Africa and Asia, to which he gives an amazing mix of movement and lightness. His sculptures are dressed in folkloric or medieval garments whose materiality is rendered in an incredibly natural way. In doing so, Beckrich manages to make the contrasts of the drapery, the folds in the fabrics and all the other details of the costumes particularly effective through his filigree art.

Exemplary creativity

Born in Brittany in 1955, Paul Beckrich was influenced early on by the creativity of his mother, who had previously worked as a first-hand and designer in a Parisian haute couture house. "I saw her making her own dresses and costumes from her scribbles sketched with a bold stroke.", Paul recalls.

Just in time before embarking on a conventional career in a bank, he discovered his vocation for pottery and enameling. Towards the middle of the 1980s, Paul Beckrich began to focus on modelling figures, which culminated in the presentation of one of his plaster sculptures at the Salon des Indépendants at the Grand Palais in Paris as early as 1989.

International recognition

Since 2006, the artist has devoted himself mainly to the production of figures in fired ceramics in raku technique and in bronze and was rewarded with the “Prix du Public” at the Salon d'Art Contemporain in Marseille in 2009. Numerous exhibitions followed in New York, London, Paris, Courchevel, Mégève, Cannes and Singapore.

"Escaping into the fantasy world of my characters gives me joy and serenity, which I can't get myself through any other creative discipline in such an intense way and which I can also pass on.", is how Paul sums it up.
