Pela uses the old Japanese Shou-Sugi-Ban method, with which he works the wood like a sculpture and gives it shape and colour. Different fire intensities are used depending on the desired firing structure. The depth effect or shading is achieved using embers that are blown in with compressed air. When the sculpture is finished, it is ignited with an intense flame until it reddens and then hardens in water like steel.
