Description

The shapes and contours of the object are first created with the help of a chainsaw and in the following creative process fire comes into play. Depending on the desired burning structure, different fire intensities are used. The depth effect or shading is achieved with embers that are blown in with compressed air. When the sculpture is finished, it is ignited with an intense flame until reddened and then hardened in water like steel. The final effect of shape, form and structure is achieved by grinding and polishing with felt discs. Hardening and protection against burnishing is achieved with preparations specially patented by JJ Pela.

Specifications

The concluding processing technique for each sculpture induces variations in the hues of the burnt wood. Previously unnoticed colors emerge under the influence of the lighting conditions, the viewing angle, or even the time of day. To maintain the sculpture's pristine condition, an ostrich feather brush is provided for cleaning.

After more than two and a half decades as a freelancer in the production of interior design objects, JJ Pela established himself successfully as an independent artist who has since focused on the creation of expressive wooden sculptures. Pela uses only naturally occurring broken wood and treats it using the traditional Japanese Shou-Sugi-Ban method. JJ Pela made his first appearance on the international art scene by taking part in the exhibition "Abstract Art & Art Mind" at The Brick Lane Gallery in London in 2022.
