Worldwide reputation

The family-owned brand manufactures its products in the same factory where Italy's first fountain pens were produced in 1915. Today, a production team of 50 craftspeople realises nearly all the processes and components, including – from 2023 – even the production of the fountain pen nibs themselves. These artisans are masters of engraving, hand painting, bas-relief and enamelling. No wonder that Montegrappa has many fans worldwide - such as Quincy Jones, Sylvester Stallone and Al Pacino.

From Bassano to the world

When personal correspondence boomed at the beginning of the 20th century, a group of ambitious entrepreneurs opened Italy's first fountain pen factory in 1912 in Bassano. Sixteen years later, Bassano’s famous Elmo pens get a new look and a new name – introducing the Montegrappa insignia.

While time passes, the company embarks in the late 30s on a long and fruitful relationship with stationery merchant, Leopoldo Tullio Aquila. His ensuing love for pens and the finer things in life would go on to shape four generations. It is his son Gianfranco Aquila who acquires Montegrappa in 1981 to start a renaissance and turn the brand into a global player.

A brand becomes a benchmark

Along with Montegrappa CEO Giuseppe Aquila, Quincy Jones himself cuts the ribbon to open Montegrappa’s first flagship boutique in Bassano and premiere his very own capsule collection in 2014. A year later, Montegrappa unveiled the Q1 at Baselworld, which Forbes described as “a technological proclamation for the industry.”

Over the years, Montegrappa has steadily expanded its portfolio through a variety of carefully selected collaborations and the launch of stunning collections. With its unique craftsmanship and innovation, Bassano’s famous manufactory has become one of the few references for luxury writing instruments in the world – con cordiali saluti dal Veneto!
