The epitome of excellence

It was our founder Thomas Löffler's unforgettable stays at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok that led us to create the "Beyond Europe" category at Luxvivendi - even though we usually focus primarily on luxury manufacturers, artisans and hosts from Europe. Around 9,000 kilometres by plane from our Luxvivendi headquarters, the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. A hotel that has 271 rooms and 60 suites and whose service level is rightly regarded as the global standard in the luxury hotel world.

Danish entrepreneurship in Siam

In the middle of the nineteenth century, a guesthouse for foreign sailors was established on the banks of the river then known as the Maenam. It was to become one of the world’s best hotels: The Oriental. Built in 1876, The Oriental, became the first luxury hotel in the Kingdom of Siam. Built in 1876, The Oriental was the first luxury hotel in the Kingdom and was founded by the Danish-born sailor H.N. Andersen, who was also honoured by the King of Siam with the Order of the White Elephant.

Global reputation

In 1974, Mandarin International Hotels Limited, owner of The Mandarin in Hong Kong since 1963, was founded as a hotel management company and acquired a 45 per cent stake in The Oriental. In 1985, the company optimised its structure by merging these two prestigious properties under a common name, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. In 2008, The Oriental officially changed its name to Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. Eleven years later, the iconic hotel reopened its River Wing after the largest renovation in its history, naturally retaining its classic Thai-influenced elegance and unique resort style.
